The Secret Behind Words And Images

At Babel, a group of people were intent on building a tower but failed. The biblical account on the surface seems to suggest that our Heavenly Father changed their languages. Think about it, if all God did was to give them different languages then they could have used signs or drawn images to illustrate what they were trying to achieve. Even in our time we see huge construction projects being executed by people of several nationalities at the same time. What God did was to confuse their understanding so they could not “see” the same things. He took away their ability to distribute their mental images to each other. That is what communication is. You have a collection of images in your mind which you put in a container known as words and distribute them through speech or some form of oral communication. At Babel, one dude said “bring me a shovel” and his friend thought he meant “wheelbarrow”. Whatever you understand is what you see in your mind. Once you understand it, that image becomes fixed and can control your mind if you let it. Many people allow their thoughts to control them. They say they are speaking their mind but it’s really a collection of images they have understood that they are voicing out. Ever wonder why you can mid-sentence?
It is because as you started speaking your mind realized it had not formed a clear enough image to convert into words.

The mind is a folder. It is a collection of words and images that form our imagination.

How to control your mind and influence people

Have you noticed that you either consciously or unconsciously see a place before you go there? You do not get to the kitchen and say “wow, how did I get here? I thought I was going to the bathroom.” We are not surprised when you arrive at a location because we see the image even before we got there. Our imagination has the power to control our thoughts. This is why you cannot go to a place you have not imagined first.

Images control our minds and then they control the body.

We become what we imagine. The imagination is a collection of images that we have gathered through the education of our senses. What we continuously see and hear forms images. The moment an individual understands what he is hearing or seeing, an image is formed. If that image stays in his mind long enough; his body, life, behavior and thoughts will change to mimic that image. The right images will create the right life.

Words are images

Our minds have the ability to interpret the letters we understand as images. When a friend sends you a harsh message, you read words but the images your mind sees prick your emotions. Think about this for a second:
When I say “black dog!” or when you hear a dog bark you do not see the letters “WOOF”. What you see is an animal. If I said “small black dog”, that image would change immediately in your mind. Knowing this will make you understand why some have rich and yet others possess poor minds. A rich mind is a fruitful one. It is a mind that creates value for the possessor and the world around her. A poor mind is exactly the opposite. The possessor of this mind thinks, believes and does the wrong things on a continuous basis sometimes even when they mean to do right, they end up messing things up. They have believed the wrong things so they end up doing the wrong things. Money, Culture, Environment or background do not play as much of a role as people would like to think when it comes to how much value a person’s mind can conjure. What is most important is what the person sees, hears, understands and speaks on a continuous basis.

Dan Gossett have an excellent book on this topic. Check it out What You Say Is What You Get by Don Gossett (1976) Paperbackhere.

I was speaking to a group of young entrepreneurs a few months ago and mentioned that whenever people expect older people to be wiser than younger people I find it ludicrous. Think about your life for a second. What is one of the major differences between the 17 year old version of yourself and the 25 year old version? Ten years did not automatically mature you. Neither did your physical growth contribute too much to your mental development. Was it your understanding? I believe it was. Did you not know and understand more at 25 than you did at 15 and at age 20? To make this even more practical, do you not know people who are your age or even older who think, make decisions or act like children? Yes, you do.

If my theory is true then you can hack your mental growth by studying, practicing and understanding today what would be expected of someone of your stature in the next 10 years. A 22 year old who is as mentally developed as a 30 year old will be head and shoulders above many of her contemporaries in a short time. The key to speedy advancement in life whether it be spiritual, mental, physical or social is understanding. When you see what others do not see, you can go where they cannot.

Think about Church. Whenever a preacher teaches the Gospel aka Good News i.e Jesus Christ, Love, Faith, Grace and Prosperity, the congregation’s lives are transformed for the better. However if the preacher continuously preaches fire and brimstone, fear, the law and unbelief, his listeners shrivel and become weary. After the service you can tell from their faces that they just took a beating. We sometimes say “I just listened to someone give a speech or teach a sermon”, but that is not really what we witnessed. What the speaker did was to distribute images. We are all in the image distribution game.
This is the same with whatever media, movie, book or TV show you are allowing to preach to you. Whenever I speak with teenagers I am amazed by how most of them seem to have the same images sometimes regardless of their age or background. I will share more insights on how entire nations have influenced by the words they have heard. I am convinced that if you subjected yourself to listen to the right words for 3 months, you could redefine your life without much effort. This is why reading and a value for knowledge acquisition is so important for an entrepreneur.

Your business will mimic your mind. If you poor money management skills, it will be difficult to set and maintain an efficient budget for your business. The easiest way to gather the right images is through reading or listening to people who have a rich collection of their own. Studying people who have successfully done what you want to do with your business will give you a shortcut to success if you will do the right things. I will share more on how to add value to your mind and communicate effectively in a subsequent post but first check out this video and buy this book by Dan Gossett.

How to create systems in your business with principles from the police, chess masters and football managers

What you can learn from how Chess masters and football managers implement systems

In 1972 when Bobby Fischer was playing Spassky, he used an opening from the 1800s called The Scotch Game to become World Champion. Everyone gasped because most Americans were using openings and styles that the Russians already knew how to defeat. The Russians had trained themselves to recognize patterns and systems that would beat the Americans without much thinking. Their wins did not require much human discretion on the player’s part. The Scotch Game opening was unexpected because it opened up a more superior system that made Bobby Fischer’s name even more infamous.

Let’s talk about systems in the context of business. But first, some more examples.

Have you noticed that some establishments usually have that one guy or lady who is either more courteous or responsive than all the others? If you visit this place a lot, you actually look forward to being served by that person because you know exactly what to expect. Many times, you would rather wait extra minutes to be attended to by that individual. This individual, if they treat you the same way all the time with the same results is enforcing a system. If however, her service varies, then it is just a tactic that may be based on her mood or some other conditions. As a business owner, it important to notice these people and create a system where all of your team mimic the same process. When it is done once it is a tactic, when it is done the same way with the same results and efficiency all the time it is a system.

Consider the police.

Whenever there is a crime in a developed nation, the Police if they are responsible, usually have a system made up of procedures that they follow. It usually involves something like take photos of crime scene, call for backup if suspect is at the scene, park facing crime scene, interview eye witnesses, look for CCTV footage if there is any et cetera. In less developed nations, the procedures are usually up to the discretion of the officer who gets there first. This is inefficient most of the time because it leaves room for human error especially in cases that are simple. Efficient systems enhance productivity, save money and gets to the solution in a timely fashion. In American movies, notice they always read the perp his rights after he is caught? That is a system. The officer cannot decide to say half of it just because he has a sore tooth. The system will not “allow him”.

Here’s another;

Think of your favorite football, soccer or basketball game. Most fans only see the goals and scores. The more enlightened ones see the plays and calls. They see that the managers and coaches have a mental system that they are implementing as every second passes. The really good managers can orchestrate a win like a chess match. They have learnt through research, data and intuition what works in different scenarios and are quick to implement.
When you order food from Papaye, one of Ghana’s most popular fast food joints, the person at the counter will sometimes ask you “is that all?”. This question is supposed to cause you to order something else in case you forgot to earlier on. Compare that with Mcdonald’s. Many times if you order just a burger, the person serving you will ask “do you want a drink and fries with that?”. This is not because the employee of the establishment is particularly courteous. This is a system at play. Regardless of who is catering to you, they are trained to bundle their offerings and offer you more value in exchange for your money. Remember that one of the easiest ways to increase your businesses’ income is to increase the size of each transaction. When someone orders one item, offer to bundle, upsell or cross sell with a complimentary product or service that provides additional value.

You can create a system out of most things that relate to your business. A follow up system is when someone calls a client within 7 days after they purchase your product. IF you do not have enough people on your team, you can set aside one hour of every week to send out follow up emails, phone calls, letters or text messages. You may also consider applications such as Infusionsoft and Mailchimp. This also works for social media posts as well since many entrepreneurs are too busy to be posting frequently. I will teach on how to manage time as a business owner in a later post.

Please check out W.E Deming’sOut of the Crisis book. He taught the Japanese manufacturers’ systems that made them dominate the world for decades.

Another book that comes highly recommended is this The Essential Deming: Leadership Principles from the Father of Qualityone.

What systems have you experienced or implemented that were particularly impressive?

Book Review:Signposts On The Road To Success by E.W Kenyon

Make your brain work. It will sweat, but make it work. It will improve. It will develop until you become a wonder to those around you

.—E.W Kenyon

Nearly every bookshop and library has a section for books on personal development and success. Many of them are laden with tips, tricks, keys and steps to being successful. Everyone wants to be successful so there is a lot of advice on the topic. I personally have not found a book that has more absolute advice on success than the Bible so that is my default manual. However there are a few writers who have distilled that information into bitesized chunks. E. W Kenyon was one of them.

I bought Kenyon’s book Signposts On The Road To SuccessSignposts On The Road To Success a few years ago but a friend borrowed it and never returned it. The book kept calling me so I got myself another copy. I guess there was truth to the words at the conclusion where Kenyon says

“In each page you’ll find me hiding,
I’ll be living when I’m dead,
I’ll be firing your ambition
When these living words are read.”

Now that is a quote worth framing!

This book will teach you
1. How to find out what gifts you possess
2. How to develop your gifts
3. How to be responsible
4. How to be the leader in your field
5. How Love plays a role in a man’s ambitions
6. The power of confession and saying the right words
7. How to live a life without worry
8. Diligence, Determination and Sacrifice.

“We have been taught politically to hate the people who have been successful in life, that if a man has gained a position of affluence, he must be bad.
That is wrong.
Men like Henry Ford have climbed to the place they occupy by sheer efficiency and downright honesty.
Class hatred is an unfortunate thing.
It does not belong in a democracy. It does not belong anywhere.
Why should I hate the man who is smarter than I am, and who has achieved more than I have?
I should honor him and thank God that there are men of that kind.
Class hatred robs a nation of its efficiency; it robs men of the pleasure and joy of fellowshipping and working with each other “

I personally read this book at least once a year. If you want motivation and insights on how to be more fulfilled in your calling, this is a short 121 page book. If you do not know what to do with your life, read this book.

Below I will share some of my favorite quotes by E.W Kenyon

“As I study men and women, I am convinced of this: There are very few who have developed to the limit the possibilities within them. There is no over-development. Many people are in the wrong place in life. They have no gift for the thing they are trying to do. They are doing it simply to get by.”
“There is room and a salary waiting for the man who has ability and is willing to put hard work into it. Choose your work, rather than have the work in which you have no interest thrust upon you. Find out what you can do, what you like best to do.”

Reading this book the third time made me very conscious of my mandate. I feel very responsible for the economic development of entrepreneurs and nations. E.W Kenyon added some fire to my caboose and reminded me to be responsible in all my actions. It even affected my reading. For example, I find it very difficult to read for leisure now. Even if someone recommends a book, if it won’t help me to be a bigger blessing to my world and the people I am called to serve, I usually shelf it.

“I don’t care who you are. I don’t care what your handicaps are. They have never made a handicap that could hold any man down who had in him the yeast to rise.”
“Most of the people who are at the bottom are at the bottom because they will to stay there. That is where they belong. It is a hard thing to say, but it is true. I am now what I willed to be through all these years.

“The first thing to do is to find out what you want. Set your eyes on the goal. Then fight for it. There must be an objective. When you find that objective, set your compass and sail for that star”

I have noticed that indecisiveness is one of the biggest problems of this generation. A lot of people do not know what direction to go, what job to take, whether they should date this person or not et cetera. Kenyon explains how to find out which direction to be facing and how to go at it with all the resources the Lord has given you.

“I said, “I will tell you what your trouble is the way it appears to me. You have the wrong slant on life. You have talked about your failing, your difficulties until they have become a mental disease. I venture to say that the last man of whom you sought to find employment read you like a book and said, ‘I don’t want that man in my crew. He is a chronic fault finder. You have had so much trouble that you have eaten it, slept with it, dreamed it, until it oozes out of you. He said, “I know it, but how can I overcome it? It is the easiest thing in the world to overcome. Solomon’s solution was to, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not upon thine own understanding. In other words, go into partnership with God where you cannot fail. But that is religion. There is no religion about this. You are dead wrong. Religion is a man-made thing. This is a God-made thing. This is common sense to link up with God. You take Jesus Christ as your Savior and you confess Him as your Lord. The moment you do you receive God’s life and ability, and you cannot fail. If you will walk with Him you can no more fail than Jesus failed.” “But Jesus failed on the cross, didn’t He? Yes, but it was the greatest victory which came out of that failure that has ever been known. That was divine strategy. He will make you a conqueror if you walk with Him.”

“Let’s be careful of the words we use.
Don’t tell that story you heard the other day about this man or that woman.
Don’t let any other ears be poisoned as your ears have been poisoned with it.
Never repeat scandal. Never repeat the calamity things.
Let others do the talking about that.
You keep your lips for beautiful things,
helpful things, comforting things.
That is your job. “

The Bible and Kenneth E Hagin taught me the importance of saying the right things. Words are literally and vitally containers of whatever we put in them. Your life will go no further than the quality of your words.

“Everywhere big business is hunting for competent help.
Many mediocre men fill places of importance because no one can be found who is really fitted for the job.
It is surprising how difficult it is to find even a good stenographer, to find someone who can take charge of a department and make it a success, to find someone who will take a vital interest in the work and put it over.”
“Almost every man and woman is a “time server.”
His ambition is to get his wages with as little work as possible.
The new mental attitude is to get, without giving.
You cannot be a success and do that.
The good old days of honest labor seem to be but a dream today.
The road that leads to a good bank account is an uphill road and most of us have to build the road ourselves.
The hitch-hikers are filling the road today. They want someone else’s car to ride in. They want someone to buy the gas. They want someone to pay the taxes and give them free passage.
Are you a mental hitch-hiker?
Are you a mental hobo? Or are you one of the fellows who pay the taxes, build the roads and bear the burdens.”

“If you are a success, you will have to bear the burdens.
You will have to pay the taxes for a hundred other people.
The easy way is to hobo it.
It is the way of least resistance.
I believe a fellow can get used to going on short rations, wearing old clothes, and sleeping in the jungle; but as for me, I am going to go to the top.
I am sending out this invitation for the rest of you to come with me. “

“I sold to people who had no music in them. I sold to them because of the excessive, burning desire in my heart to make them happy.
That is the thing which sells.
Settle it in your own mind. Is the thing you are selling worth while?
If it is not, then get something that is.
If you are selling insurance, bonds, autos, or groceries, know this: If your entire ambition is simply to get the money out of it, you will fail. But if you are giving them something that is going to be a blessing, and you are enthusiastic over it, you will be a success. “

My notes are mostly personal when it comes to this book so the quotes would have to suffice.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book Signposts On The Road To SuccessHERE today. You will not regret it. It has become mandatory reading in our business.
